Proposition 65 is officially known as The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986. California has standards that are stricter than any other state, as well as those of the US government. In order to sell within the state of California, if a product contains any of the approximately 900 chemicals on the list, it must contain this warning. The chemicals used in our manufacturing process are not harmful; formaldehyde may sound a little scary, but it could be likened to chlorine and that’s found in every drop of tap water. The levels we use are very low (MDF is less than 0.11ppm and particleboard is 0.09ppm, or parts per million)—well within government set safety levels. There are many benefits to the use of this chemical; formaldehyde-based glues are versatile, cost effective and high performing. Additionally, formaldehyde vastly reduces waste of wood products. Occasionally, some customers have noticed a slight odor when first opening the box. Even this is still not enough to be harmful. While it may be unpleasant, it will dissipate within a day or two.
